bumper protector Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy bumper protector, right? No!

Brands and Manufacturers

In alphabetical order, the most popular brands for iPhone bumpers, cases, and screen protectors are: Agent 18, Amzer, Belkin, BodyGuard, CrazyOnDigital, iFrogz, iLuv, Incipio, Krusell, Poetic, Otterbox, Seidio, Skinomi, Stoeck Products, and ZAGG.

If you are considering purchasing weight plates, for either home or commercial use, it’s incredibly important to understand the different discs that are available.

Olympic Discs  a standard size across the fitness industry, are known as Olympic because of the 2″ diameter centre hole. They fit all commercial bars and most plate loaded gym equipment ranges such as our Sterling range.

Standard Discs generally considered for most home gyms, only have a 1″ diameter hole. Standard weight plates will not fit on an Olympic bar.

Rubber Weight Plates

Rubber weight plates are exactly the same as cast iron weight plates, but with an extra layer of rubber coating for safety, protection and longevity. The rubber coating helps both the weight plate and the floor to a certain degree, and will ensure that the plates are longer lasting and harder wearing.

One step up within this section is urethane coated plates. These are generally the same dimensions and shape as rubber plates, but are much more durable and less susceptible to markings and cosmetic damage. As well as marking less easily, these plates will not mark your floor, walls and other equipment like rubber plates will. They also have the benefit of not offgassing, which some rubber products do in gym environments creating an often unpleasant smell.

With rubber coated weight plates, it is quite common to see terms like “non-standard Olympic plates”. Non-standard Olympic plates are plates which are made to fit Olympic sized bars but have a reduced circumference when compared with a traditional Olympic weight plate. The main thing which makes a plate non-standard is the presence of grips, which are cut into the plate making them easier to lift off the ground, perform exercises without a bar and to place back in the weight rack.

Technique Bumper Weight Plates

Demand for bumper plates has been increasing over recent years due to growing popularity of Olympic lifting, some of which can be attributed to a rise in the number of people participating in CrossFit training.

A bumper plate is a solid rubber weight disc which can be safely used for performing Olympic lifts and can be dropped from a height during exercises like snatches and presses. The purpose of bumpers is to create a safe environment and allow certain exercises to be performed without the risk of damages to the floor, equipment or athlete.

Strength and conditioning coaches and gyms have long been using Olympic lifts in training, and weightlifting as a sport relies upon this core set of movements that require the use of bumper plates.

The first kind of bumper plate available is a technique plate. These are very basic and made from a simple single piece of rubber, without a metal ring around the hole. These only come in light weights and are perfect for introducing beginners to Olympic lifts and helping athletes improve their technique. Facilities tend only to have a small set of technique plates and they are normally only produced in 2.5kg and 5kg weights, otherwise training or competition plates would be used.

Training Bumper Weight Plates

Training bumper plates can vary slightly in depth but will all, for the most part, be a similar diameter. Top manufacturers like Eleiko and Zhangkong produce training plates which are the exact dimensions of competition weightlifting plates.

More affordable training bumper plates may not be the exact depth of IWF competition plates, however they will, for the most part, stand up the Olympic lifting requirements of a specialist facility, commercial gym or CrossFit box. Training plates usually come in black or are colour coded by weight.

Competition Bumper Plates

The factor which separates Olympic competition plates from training plates and all other kinds of free weights is the calibration. Official IWF Competition rules mean that plates need to be accurate to +0.1% and -0.05%. This means that production of a 25kg plate only has a 2gram margin for error. The result is that Competition bumper plates are incredibly accurate and consistent, so the weight you are lifting is absolutely what you think it is. Origin Fitness is a proud distributor of Zhangkong Olympic weightlifting equipment which is IWF approved and has been selected to be used at the 201Rio Olympic games.

Fractional Plates

Within our Zhangkong range we also have fractional (or incremental) plates. These include 0.5kg. 1kg, 1.5kg. 2kg, 2.5kg, and 5kg discs. The 0.5-1.5kg also have no metal insert within the centre circle. This is ideal when in competition, it means you can add these on the end without removing the cuff. The grip in the inner circle sticks to the bar and does not move, keeping the other plates in place.

Powerlifting plates

These plates generally come in cast iron, steel or a chromed metal. They are thinner than the plates listed above as they allow for more weight to be added to the bar, specifically in the sport of powerlifting. This is important to elite lifters and more advanced training centres as it keeps the discs closer to your centre of gravity eliminating any whip on the squat.

The Pros and Cons of Adding a Steel Front Bumper

If you are considering adding a steel front bumper to your Jeep or off-road vehicle, it is important to learn a little more about these bumpers before you go shopping. Some important details to be aware of are the differences between steel and other materials used to make front bumpers, the durability of the different materials, how they might change your driving experience, and what accessories and add-ons are compatible with them.

Steel vs. Factory

Factory-installed bumpers aren’t the best. Oftentimes, factory bumpers have a minimum amount of steel or aluminum bracing underneath a bumper cover, which is sometimes made of ABS plastic. Factory bumpers are also not very convenient to outfit with accessories like winches or lights. When you think about strength and all the cool and useful accessory options, an aftermarket steel bumper just makes more sense.

Steel Bumper Technology

Steel front bumpers for off-road vehicles have coatings that are used to influence the corrosion life of the bumper. Steel is often e-coated and then painted or powder-coated. Steel bumpers that are roll-formed can also be made of bare steel and are then e-coated after the forming process. Some steel is coated with zinc, which greatly improves the life of the steel by discouraging or preventing corrosion. Most steel bumpers for off-road applications are powder-coated so they resist corrosion, scratches and minor dings, avoiding damage in many situations.

In the past, steel bumpers were very thick. With new technology, the gauge of the steel is decreasing as the strength of the steel increases. This has allowed the creation of steel bumpers that are lighter and just as strong, or even stronger, than what was available in the past.

Steel Bumpers for Off-Roading

The front of your vehicle may sag up to a few inches lower after the addition of a steel front bumper. Because of the sag, there is a slight loss of clearance. Drivers should be aware of this difference, however slight, when going over large objects and bumps. The good news is that this sag can be corrected with new springs.

Although changes in handling are minimal, some drivers may notice: a slightly longer braking time, the back-end of the vehicle turning slightly more during a fast or hard swerve, and the front-end responding to steering more quickly, all due to the extra weight at the front end of the vehicle.

Spigen Galaxy SSlim Armor CS

If you want a case with a card slot, but don’t want to cover up your screen with a wallet case, look no further than Spigen’s Slim Armor CS. In addition to protecting your case, it slides open at the back to reveal a slot to store a couple of your most-used cards for easy(ish) access.

Ted Baker Galaxy SRange

Most notable are the floral folio cases with a mirror inside (“for on-the-go pampering”), though if you’d rather look at your phone than yourself, there’s also a more straightforward shell case. It’s not all flowers and glitter either – the SS1Boatsee case comes in a more restrained navy fabric finish.

Speck Presidio for Galaxy S8

Speck boasts that its phone cases are ‘designed for impact’, so much so that they’re built out of none other than ‘Impactium’, which we’re pretty sure they just made up – but as long as it works, we don’t mind, and it supposedly offers up to 10-feet of drop protection.

The Presidio cases are sturdy but slim, and should provide ample protection to the body of the phone. They don’t cover the screen, but are raised enough at the sides to offer those bezel-less edges a little extra protection.

You can pick up the normal Presidio in a variety of plain colours, but for the same price we prefer the Presidio Grip models – the two-tone ridged design looks great, and protects against slippy fingers.

As you’d expect, you can grab the same range for the SPlus too.

RhinoShield CrashGuard Bumper for Galaxy S8

Naturally, the downside of a bumper is the screen itself is unprotected, but for most drops and falls, it’ll do the job.

You can grab the CrashGuard case for either the Sor the SPlus, and it’s available in black, grey, or dark blue.

Olixar Galaxy SArmourDillo

If you’re a bit less concerned with preserving the aesthetic and a bit more concerned with having an “impact-resistant polycarbonate exoskeleton” wrapped around your phone, the ArmourDillo might be for you.

You can get it in all-black, or with red or blue accents, and there’s also an SPlus version.

X-Doria Galaxy SDefense Shield

The case boasts an aluminium frame with clear polycarbonate backing, and a rubber bumper to bear the brunt of any impacts – it can apparently survive drops up to 3m/10ft onto concrete.

The metal frame is also customisable – you can pick between black, rose gold, or the garish ‘iridescent’.

Terrapin Low Profile Wallet for Galaxy S8

Terrapin’s Low Profile Wallet is one of the cheapest wallet cases for the Sand SPlus, so it’s ideal for anyone who’s already broken the bank on the phone and doesn’t want to do the same for a case.

It’s made of imitation leather, features a magnetic side clasp that’s easy to use and adds minimal bulk, and can be turned on its side for a viewing stand.

The build quality isn’t fantastic, but for less than a tenner we can’t complain. Check out the rest of Terrapin’s Srange here.

GearPiccadilly for Galaxy S8

The clear case is made with metallic D3O to prevent impact damage, combined with a UV coating to make it scratch-resistant. It won’t block access to any ports, and comes in a range of colours intended to complement the Sitself, including orchid grey, black, coral blue, and more (though only black is currently available to pre-order).

As with most Scases, there’s a larger variant for SPlus owners too.

Obliq Slim Meta Chain for Galaxy S8

Here’s something a little different. Obliq’s Slim Meta Chain pairs a polycarbonate core with an elaborate chainmail-style backplate, so your phone can look just as protected as it hopefully is.

Entertainment

The 197Mercury Comet was a transitional car. Designed in the freewheeling late-1960s, this later version had to contend with 1970s government regulations, which is plain to see from those massive mandated bumpers.

The Comet name had been applied to various Mercury compacts throughout the 1960s, and the design that debuted in 197shared just about everything but extra trim bits with the Ford Maverick.

Things were much simpler in back, with a thick flat bar spanning the car beneath the tail lights.

The result was something so wide that it could double as a seat at the tailgate parties, with a V in the middle for good measure.
