Best business travel backpack 2018 – [Buyer’s Guide]
Last Updated December 1, 2023Hi there, I’m Roger Barnett. I spent 28 hours researching and testing 24 different types of business travel backpack and found that material, variety of sizes, and style were most important.
In fact, it was the first time I had been in this situation and what I thought was going to be a very quick and easy task turned out to be a good many weeks of research. You see I’m an average member of the public just like you and the main reason I decided to publish a review website on business travel backpack is because I was looking for one not so long ago.
Best business travel backpack of 2018
On that note, I review the three best business travel backpack of 2018 to help you get value for your money. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your comfort, style, or accessibility, we have picks to fit a variety of needs and budgets. You can make a choice based on the my list as you shop. I want to find something that’s designed well (both for aesthetic purposes and efficiency).

business travel backpack Buyer’s Guide
Under Armour Storm Hustle II Backpack
This durable, water-resistant, lightweight backpack by Outlander is the best-rated backpack for traveling purposes.
With a stylish look, this packable go-anywhere pack is for super-minimalists who make every gram count. Ultra-light. Ultra-durable. Ultra-awesome. The backpack is perfect for day-to-day use or occasional travel.
Folds into a zippered inner pocket to fit anywhere. Unfolds from pocket to backpack. This backpack is a must-have on every trip and a great gift for everyone too.
Multi Compartments to keep things organized: Features a classic shape with several pockets for storage and organization. This backpack has a roomy main compartment, two front zipper pockets to hold small accessories, one internal security zippered pocket for valuable items and two side pockets for water bottle or umbrella.
Water-resistant and DURABLE: The backpack is made from highly rip and water-resistant nylon fabric, which provides strength and long-lasting performance, with minimal weight. Stress points are reinforced with bar tacking for increased longevity. Durable 2-way Abrasion Resistant SBS Metal Zippers across the backpack is used.
COMPACT: Folds into a zippered inner pocket to fit anywhere. Unfolds from pocket to backpack. A must-have on any trip.
LIGHTWEIGHT: Stuff the bag into its own pocket for storage and unzip it when you reach your destination. Avoid overweight baggage charges by simply unfolding it from your luggage and using it as a carry on for your excess baggage.
This bag by Outlander is a True Space Saver. Very Lightweight (0.4Pounds/0.Pounds) and Roomy (20 Liters/3Liters).
Water-resistant
The ripstop material used in this backpack is obviously not the most durable material out there (or how could the pack be so light?), so some common sense will tell you to take care when packing anything with sharp edges that might penetrate the material.
All in all, this affordable backpack is perfect for traveling purposes or even for day to day use.
You can pack all of your gear in this extra-roomy, full-featured laptop backpack. This bag gives excellent protection for a laptop and tablet.
This backpack comes with a checkpoint-friendly design to get you through airport security quickly. Just open up the case fully to let the case get scanned without removing your laptop.
The SwissGear ScanSmart Backpack features interior and exterior organizer pockets, an airflow back system, and water bottle pocket.
Straps you can barely feel: This backpack comes with Ergonomically contoured, padded straps for all-day comfort.
The negatives to this bag are its size. If you do not need a bag this large, opt for a smaller bag. By its self, the bag is pretty heavy.
Storage:
Main compartment provides space for larger items and organization for flat documents and small accessories. Secondary compartment offers a series of organizer pockets to hold tech accessories and other small items. Dedicated side-access iPad pocket. Hip-side Power Pocket with integrated cable port to allow access to portable power or audio.
All in all, this is a great backpack for daily office work.
Some Features of this Backpack are
MULTI-COMPARTMENT & CLASSIFIED: MAIN pockets & INNER small pockets & SEALED SIDE pockets, provides a separated space for your Laptop, iPhone, iPad, pen, keys, wallet, books, clothes, bottle and more. Easily find what you want.
SAFETY: Included a Theft proof combination lock and durable metal zippers, which protects wallet and other items inside from thief and offers a private space.
Includes additional bag
This is a pretty good backpack for hiking except that the bag is built in a way that all of the weight is at the end and not close to the back.
No matter how much you choose to carry, dual compression straps of this pack stabilizes the load. This backpack is just perfect for travel and hiking purposes within this price range.
This backpack can be considered as BAD ASS PACK.
The whole point of a laptop bag is to protect your device, and that means having as snug a fit as possible. As well as looking for laptop compartments designed specifically for the size of your laptop, choose a laptop bag that uses soft but firm fabrics for the lining, much as you would expect to find inside a laptop sleeve, such as neoprene (the stuff used to make wetsuits) or faux-felt.
A good laptop bag will house not just your laptop, but your entire gadget arsenal. Look for an easily accessible pocket on the front containing at least two smartphone-sized pouches – one is really useful for storing a portable battery – as well as a pen-holder or two. There should also be space for a coiled pair of earphones, and a clip somewhere to attach house keys. An additional pouch or pocket, or at the very least some room in the main compartment, should be able to store power cables and adaptors.
Build quality is crucial if you want your bag to last. Make sure zips are good quality – metallic if possible for both the zipper and the teeth. Avoid small, plastic zips. Their inevitable destruction will leave the whole bag useless.
Backpack Features
You can’t talk about backpacks (or any piece of gear) without highlighting features. Gear features are like drugs — they’re time-tested, they make you feel good, and you talk about them incessantly.
Internal Frame: As opposed to the external frame, this is the style of pack. Packs with the support on the inside are internal, packs with support bars on the outside are external.
Hydration Sleeve: CamelBak started the wave of hydration via tube-sucking, and now most packs have a sleeve inside the pack (or a separate outer sleeve) to place a hydration bladder. This also implies a hole for the tube so you can drink hands-free.
Trampoline Suspension: Some companies use trampoline suspension on the back panel. This is excellent for ventilation and an even weight distribution. Depending on the pack it can suffer at higher weights.
Load Lifters: These straps are essential to a backpacking backpack as they pull the pack closer to your back, adjusting the comfort and carry ability while you hike.
Brain/Floating Lid: A top compartment to hold easy accessible basic items. Detaches on some backpacks for reduced load and customization. Also closes the pack to sandwich bulky items outside of the confines of the backpack.
Convertible Day Pack: Some backpacks now have a convertible daypack included, often in the brain/floating lid. This makes day hikes a breeze without bringing a whole separate backpack.
Hip Belt Pockets: Everyone’s favorite feature — small pockets for chapstick, energy bars, smartphones, or cameras that are built right into your hip belt.
Shoulder Strap Pockets: Not seen very often, a pocket on the front of your shoulder strap for carrying a water bottle or smartphone.
Adjustable Sternum Strap (with whistle): The sternum strap helps to balance the load, and should sit roughly two inches below your collarbone. Most packs allow you slide your sternum strap up and down, and some wilderness backpack versions have whistles attached for easy SOS or animal scaring tactics.
Sleeping Bag Compartment: Instead of one long chute, some packs have a divider and separate zipper at the bottom called a “sleeping bag compartment.” You can put anything here that you want easy access to, not just a sleeping bag.
Ice Axe Loops: For the ice-loving trekkers, these are specific loops hanging off the backpack that make attachment very simple. Can attach other things here as well.
Trekking Pole Loops: Very similar to the above, and sometimes one and the same feature. Many hikers (long distance and day hikers) like to use trekking poles. Being able to store them in your pack is sweet.
Drawstring Closure: A method of closing your pack that involves tightening a drawstring that compresses everything down. Easy access, but not very weatherproof.
Rolltop Closure: A method of closing your pack that involves rolling up the remainder of fabric into a burrito-like shape, then snapping that closed with a buckle. This is pretty waterproof but can be annoying to get things out of.
Additional Backpack Fit Adjustments
Load Lifter Straps: These are stitched into the top of the shoulder straps, and they connect to the top of the pack frame. Ideally, they will form a 45° angle between your shoulder straps and the pack. Kept snug (but not too tight), they prevent the upper portion of a pack from pulling away from your body, which would cause the pack to sag in your lumbar region.
Sternum Strap: This mid-chest strap allows you to connect your shoulder straps, which can boost your stability. It can be useful to do so when traveling on uneven cross-country terrain where an awkward move could cause your pack to shift abruptly and throw you off-balance.
The Backpack
Functional and adaptable, the Tom Bihn Tri-Star offers great organization, a durable build with a lifetime guarantee, and a choice of handy carry options. Quick-access front pockets are useful for smaller travel, work and EDC items, while three compartments provide storage for clothes, tech and documents. The bag includes top and side carry handles and stowable backpack straps, and can also be used with an optional shoulder strap.
Wheeled
Designed in collaboration with DJ KASKADE, this roller offers urban-friendly style combined with useful travel functionality. Top and side handles assist with maneuverability in awkward spaces, and a quick-access front pocket is handy for the likes of toiletries. A choice of mesh pockets in the main compartment prevent a jumbled mess, and the clamshell-style opening enables easy access throughout. As an added bonus, the roller also comes with a luggage tag.
Crafted from lightweight yet tough polycarbonate, the Salsa Air Multiwheel brings style and easy maneuverability to your travels. The bag includes spinner wheels, top and side carry handles, a TSA-approved combination lock, and two interior mesh pockets for organization. The 33L case also comes with a five-year warranty and looks good in any setting.
The Lite-Cube Spinner offers a sophisticated combination of elegance, durability and easy movement. The case is crafted from impact-resistant yet lightweight Curv material and comes with a 10-year warranty. The clamshell opening reveals a choice of interior pockets for organization. Complementing the interior are useful exterior features including a TSA lock, recessed top and side carry handles, and an integrated ID tag.
Garment Bags and Suit Carriers
The Henty CoPilot tackles the challenges of business travel with a two-in-one design. The exterior garment bag is designed to roll around an inner tube bag that can hold shoes, accessories, toiletries and other travel essentials. Exterior pockets on the garment bag let you keep a laptop and smaller business or travel items within easy reach. A choice of grab handles and backpack straps keep you moving smoothly in changing environments, and a rain cover protects your gear against the elements.
With an approach that focuses both on a minimalist design and extremely sturdy quality, this American-made Daylight backpack by Tom Bihn features an exterior made from either 400D Halcyon/420D ripstop nylon or 1000D Cordura and an interior lining of either ripstop or HT Parapack nylon. Though the carry features of these bags are fairly simple, the materials out of which they are constructed are advanced and very durable.
Aer Fit Pack 2
The San Francisco based crew at Aer designs some of our favorite backpacks on the market, and the brand’s entry level option (the Fit Pack 2), shows exactly why. Designed specifically for the urban dweller, this streamlined pack features just under 1liters of storage, offering plenty of room for your EDC gear, laptop, and even an isolated shoe compartment perfect for gym junkies. And you’ll rest easy knowing all of that gear is protected within the confines of the bag’s ultra durable, water-resistant 1680D Cordura nylon shell.
Mystery Ranch Kletterworks Flip Bag
Based on a bag that was originally designed for scaling mountainsides, this overhauled version of the Kletterworks Flip Bag is a more streamlined and modernized version. Between its 1000D Cordura and 1680 ballistic nylon exterior, 2liter capacity interior (which includes a padded internal laptop sleeve), and heirloom leather label and zipper tags, this USA-made bag occupies the more rugged side of the day-to-day backpack realm.
Hex Brigade Origin Backpack
North Face Surge Transit Backpack women’s (35-liter capacity) sizes.
HP Powerup Backpack
Over the years you do gain a lot of wisdom. If you like to take a backpack when travelling then the choice you make will ultimately define the success of your travels.
I have travelled to many places and over they years I have gone through my fair share of backpacks. Now in those days I did make some really good choices, but also made my choice of very bad choices. I am here to tell you that making the wrong choice is a very painful mistake. My back, arms and shoulders paid the price for a hasty decision on which was the best backpack to buy for air travel.
It may not seem like that big of a decision but please believe me that it is. That is especially true if you plan on going on a longer trip or perhaps visiting a number of destinations such as travelling around Europe. So to help you out I have provided a guide that should help you find the best travel backpacks in the United Kingdom in 2016.
The Right Size
Yes I know that this may at first seem obvious, but I have seen more mistakes than enough at the airport check-in to know that many people get this wrong. The size allowed varies from airline to airline. Small backpacks which are ideal for hand luggage usually are considered to be anything less than 22″ x 14″ x 9″. Anything under that size will be allowed onboard as standard hand luggage.
Padded Straps
So we know that size is important but having padded straps is for certain high on the list for comfort. It is not enough though that they are padded, but we all have different sizes of body frames, so they also need to be adjustable. Just be aware that some of these packs do have adjustable straps, but are not as adjustable as they should be.
Element Unisex Backpack
Next up our list of best backpack reviews, the Element Unisex. It comes in numerous colors, more than two dozen. That means that this stylish backpack can be a great companion for school and college. Let’s have a look at its unique features.
Coreal Backpack 35L
The Coreal Hiking Foldable Backpack Packable Lightweight Daypack is the best backpack for hiking under 50.
First of all, it’s designed to offer the perfect balance between size, durability, compact, lightweight and storage-friendly.
Let’s take a closer look at the other features of the backpack.
Water-Resistant Coating
Another significant item about this backpack is that it’s water-resistant. It’s made of water-resistant polyester, so it works as a guard. It comes with a rain cover. No matter how dense the rain is, this cover won’t let your bag get wet.
Easy Maintenance
As an expert, I’d suggest you that before you buy a backpack you should consider the quality of the zipper if you want to have your essentials safe in it.

We’ve reviewed this piece and after updating many of our full guides, we’ve made adjustments to several picks in this one. We’re confident in all of our recommendations for the best gear for travel.
A lightweight but durable option
This simple, lightweight, and well-stitched bag was the toughest packable we tested.
Duffel is a town in Belgium, once known for producing a strong woolen cloth that was perfect for making hard-wearing luggage. Though duffel bags are still popular to this day, wool has since been replaced by lighter, more-durable nylon cloth. Indeed, the lightest duffel bags now weigh less than a pound and pack into a side pocket. They’re perfect for extra storage when needed yet take up almost no space otherwise. To find the best packable duffel bag for your next trip, we hauled a bunch of awkward gear around in six top-rated bags, filling each with 30 pounds of rocks, stabbing them with Sharpie markers, scraping them on sidewalks, and overstuffing them to make sure the zippers can handle those last-minute gifts that you shouldn’t have waited to buy at the airport. In the end, L.L.Bean’s Lightweight Packable Duffle emerged as the best way to haul up to 40 liters of your unanticipated purchases and still fit it under your airline seat. It’s not the lightest or the toughest, but it strikes the best balance between the two.
Packable duffels we tested starting at top, going clockwise: High Sierra PackNGo, Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, Eagle Creek Packable Duffel, Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil, L.L.Bean Packable Duffle, Granite Gear Packable Duffel.
L.L.Bean’s Lightweight Packable Duffle has great ergonomics, solid yet lightweight construction, and just the right size and feel. (It feels like a lighter version of a typical gym bag.) Despite its voluminous capacity, it’s about the size of a small bag of potato chips when packed into its pocket and weighs just ounces. That means it’s a bit lighter and smaller than the otherwise excellent Eagle Creek. But whereas the Eagle Creek developed pin-sized holes when scraped against the sidewalk, the L.L.Bean’s thinner fabric came away with only slight abrasions. Otherwise, they’re both great bags.
As far as ergonomics go, the L.L.Bean’s well-stitched side and end handles feel comfortable and balanced, even when overstuffed. Although it doesn’t allow for a shoulder strap, like the Eagle Creek, you could wear it as a slightly awkward backpack in a pinch. Overall however, we think the L.L.Bean’s tougher material and lighter weight make it the superior packable duffel for most uses.
If you want something even lighter, Sea to Summit’s Ultra-Sil weighs a mere 2.ounces and compresses down to the size of your fist. The parachute-like fabric has more tensile strength than the extremely thin material would appear to offer. Although it is very well stitched and was able to handle an awkward load, we suspect (and the manufacturers admit) that this bag wouldn’t survive the potential punctures or scrapings of a baggage handler’s toss—there were small tears after our sidewalk scrape test and the handles appeared strained under the weight of our 30-pound testing load.
Over the past four years we’ve researched several dozen suitcases and went hands on with the 4most promising candidates in a variety of tests—including having active Virgin America flight attendants test bags for us in a fake plane fuselage in their training facility. After testing was completed, we determined that for most people the Travelpro Platinum Magna offers the best balance of features, durability, and price for most flyers who log less than 25,000 miles annually.
Compression sacks
Originally designed for reducing the bulk of lofty sleeping bags, compression sacks are stuff sacks modified with additional nylon end caps that can be pulled together by strings or straps to remove air and create a smaller, denser package that’s easier to pack. Most travelers use compression sacks to condense socks, underwear, and other stuff you don’t mind getting wrinkled into a package with half as much overall volume. For example, an 8- to 12-liter sack can compress a fleece jacket and a long-weekend’s worth of socks and underwear into something that fits in one hand. They also make a decent pillow in a pinch.
Clothing
Snarky Nomad. That’s because clothing, which is very voluminous, makes up the bulk of what’s in your bag. He recommends traveling with basic-looking clothes because you can always buy or rent something nice in a pinch, whereas lugging around formalwear just in case will always be a pain. It also helps if you can avoid cotton and stick to merino and synthetic fabrics, which dry faster. This allows you to do laundry by hand in the sink as needed to reduce the amount of clothes you need to carry.
For women
Similar fabric to the Men’s Airism, with a no-ride cut for women, these underwear are the least expensive of any we tested and among the best performing.
Clothesline
Being on the road is no excuse to be sloppy. It’s always easier to make a good first impression (especially if you’re traveling on business, or to an event like a wedding) than to fix a bad one. It’s possible to build a travel hygiene kit out of the same products you use at home, but before you rush to buy a toiletry kit and little bottles, think about your goals for the trip and whether you need all that. If you’re traveling for business, you want to make sure you have everything to freshen up and look your best. But problems can arise when you feel the need to bring a bunch of stuff for leisure travel. Dyment laments that many travelers make the mistake of trying to bring all the comforts of their homes with them when they go on vacation—the hotel’s provided washcloth might not be your favorite, but it will be good enough. He remarks, “What’s the point of even leaving if you’re just trying to feel like you’re at home anyway?” So the next time you’re going on vacation, think about leaving the fancy (and heavy) liquid hair products and grooming tools at home.
Toiletry kit
We’ve researched dozens of travel toiletry bags and dopp kits over the past several years and tested nine top-rated contenders in our most recent round of tests. After packing and unpacking a week’s worth of travel-size toiletries, conducting spill tests, and living out of the top performers on the road, we think the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Wallaby (small) is a great option for carry-on travel. It’s leak-resistant, ultralight, efficiently organized, and features a huge swiveling hook that’s easy to hang from almost anywhere—even a shower rod.
For a silky feel and extra warmth
The Sea to Summit silk liner wicks moisture, doesn’t retain smells, packs down to the size of an apple, and even weighs less than one. It makes scratchy motel and hostel linens a lot more bearable.
Connecting
Having Internet access when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings can be invaluable. Wirecutter publisher Chris Mascari flies about 70,000 miles a year, and he made a great case for connecting whenever possible: “No matter where I’m going in the world, I always like to have a working smartphone with lots of data to use. It’s so world opening to have the power of the internet in my pocket when in completely unknown places.” Maps alone can be worth the cost, not to mention the ability to access countless recommended local spots and itineraries with just a few swipes. Check out our Mobile Extras section for reviews of the best battery packs, cables (Lightning and Micro-USB), LTE hotspots, Bluetooth speakers, and more.
Exploring
Weather-resistant Expedition Field Notes are great if you’re writing in wet conditions, but don’t get them if you don’t need them. The synthetic paper feels weird and can cause some inks to smear.

Details
Protect your laptop and iPad, organize your gear and stash a change of clothes in our versatile carry-on, checkpoint-friendly travel backpack.
Padded back panels and shoulder straps with breathable mesh. Sternum strap for comfortable carrying.
The EO Travel backpack has been my “daily driver” gym bag for years and I just replaced it with the grey ecoya version. This bag easily fits gym clothes, toiletries, tupperware for lunch, a laptop (if you bring it back and forth every day), and the wear over time has been minimal. With the middle expansion unzipped it can easily fit enough clothes (depending on the season) for a long weekend, again still with room for electronics, snacks, water, etc. On flights the bag still fits under seats as a carry-on unless it’s absolutely packed to the brim.
Other bags might match the pure volume estimate in liters but I’m not sure others could compete with the number of smaller pockets to help organize all of the items you might carry every day or on trips. I’ve never had to dig around to find anything. It’s especially helpful when you need to protect sunglasses or a phone in the top pocket by the handle, or obviously a laptop in the dedicated sleeve in the back.
The perfect backpack for overnight or days trip!
Very convenient and useful for business trip. That’s why I have the black “EO Travel Backpack” too. By the way, I usually “ICON Backpack” user.
I love this backpack. Very well made and the features for my needs are great. I now need to learn how to downsize.
This bag is very cool. The main ways it could be better is if the shoulder straps were stowable, it had a pass-through for placing it on the handle of a roller bag, and the compression straps could tuck away to make them more discrete (such as with small sleeves).
Great all around trip backpack for days.
I’ve been using this backpack for three years now for almost every work day +travel days, It is still in perfect shape / if anything would happen to it Iwould buy anotherone right away. I work in IT used it for work, for gym, on bike in trame, on plane, in rain, all over europe my bag is beast. The only thing, I wish is I wish could tuck-in the hangning straps, i’m perfectionist and they pist me off.
So far, I haven’t traveled with this bag, but its fantastic. Roomier than expected. Looks great. Several people want to steal it form me. I can’t wait for my upcoming trips so I can use it to the full extent.
Plenty of compartment for your everyday gadget, high quality material, lightweight, an excellent product.
This bag is perfect for the person who take a lot of small trips or the person who need a lot of stuff during their everyday life. I’m always on the move and I don’t always have the time to sleep at home so i put everything in the bag and I go. The bag stays comfortable no matter how little or how much u put in it. I always see review saying it can definitely hold days of clothes and it can. days plus some gadgets. I have been looking for a bag for me for a long time now and i think this bag checked all the boxes. Really happy with my purchase.
I bought two of these bags one for myself and one for my spouse. We needed bags that would be nice for travel in Asia as the airlines are strict on carry-on bag space. The bags were just enough to hold what we needed for our layover tors and even a little extra space for souvenirs. The quality of the materials is top notch. Highly recommend if you are into layover tours and need to pack light.
I wanted a backpack that was versatile enough for pleasure travel and practical for business travel. This bag is the best of both worlds! It is comfortable, easily adjustable and constructed of high-quality material. I expect to have it for many years to come.
I love this bag but unfortunately it need more travel features I woudl like to see a Strap on back of bag to easily attach to upright suitcase handle ( important) Make a compartment to hide the shoulder straps. Small Compartment on the side just for passport or phone and another one for water bottle.
This backpack has minimized my luggage when traveling for weekends, weeks, or even hours. The laptop compartment is protective but soft on the laptop. I was able to fit my laptop into my Incase sleeve into the laptop compartment while filling a weeks worth of clothing and toiletries in the luggage compartment. The front compartment fit laptop and phone chargers, mouse, external speaker, headphones, and other accessories. The front pocket is very useful and accessible for a wallet, travel information, and other minimal accessories while the cell phone pocket sits conveniently above. Zippers are smooth and durable and easy to access. The bag has a useful carrying handle when not backpacking, but fits and looks like a normal school bag. My expectations for this pack were exceeded. Highly recommend.
But I refuse to let them get away with rant-free ease.
Part of the problem is that, up until very recently, the only options were top-loading hiking backpacks, or wheeled suitcases. Other options like duffel bags or school backpacks exist as well, but these are rarely suitable for round-the-world travel.
