Why did this dog bike basket come in second place?
I really liked it. It is amazing in every aspect. It did even exceed my expectations for a bit, considering the affordable price. The design quality is top notch and the color is nice. I like this product. For such a low price, I didn’t even hope it to be any better. It’s decently made. Seems that the material is good. It has a very beautiful color but I don’t really like the texture.

Why did this dog bike basket take third place?
It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time. The material is incredibly nice to the touch. It has a great color, which will suit any wallpapers. This price is appropriate since the product is very well built. I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new.

dog bike basket Buyer’s Guide
But that isn’t always going to work
Dogs are dogs. Even the smallest terrier or the cutest little lap dog still has the hunting urge and the instincts of a wolf at heart. Just one mouse/rabbit/squirrel or other dog can ruin your day, and have the wolf in our canine friends reacting in the worst possible way. As for myself, there is nothing I like more than taking me, and my mountain bike off along the back of a mountain trail and letting my dog run wild. I love it, and so does he. I get to go off adventuring, and Charlie (red setter/spaniel cross) gets to run at speed for the entire day.
The downside is that Charlie is too large to fit in a rucksack till we get to the mountain, even though it’s only a few miles away; I don’t feel safe wedging him between the handlebar’s and me; and as much as I love him, I almost killed him the last time I tried riding with him on a leash. The dog has absolutely no road sense whatsoever. So it made sense both from a practical and Health and Safety point of view, to not mix the activities together. It also meant that more often than not, Charlie got his walk and I didn’t get my ride. Sure I could have loaded the bike onto the car and driven somewhere to combine the two activities into one, but it was a hassle; and it also seemed to jar with my whole tree hugger, eco, environmental mind-set thing I have going on. It’s not all about keeping my Brad Pitt six pack on the go, you know. Ahem.
The classic style of basket, the type you’d expect to see Mary Poppins riding along with. They are of the decidedly classic market, and depending on how the wicker was sourced, the most environmentally friendly variety available. Wicker baskets are far tougher than they look and will last a long time if dried out properly when they get wet. They are also bio-degradable if not painted or dyed. Because wicker baskets are not air tight, they will also keep your fur coated friend cool in the summer months. However they can be a nightmare to clean if your dog rolls on dead animal and gets some of that rotting carcass ground in to the fibers of the wicker.
It is not always that every time you will carry your dog in a dog carrier backpack for a walk or a stroll in the park. There are times that you may want to take your dog with you when going for a long vacation which is necessary if you need your pet to enjoy the time with you. Some dog carrier backpacks are perfect for taking a walk around your place while others are perfect for travel. You may decide to settle for one that can be used for both purposes which is the best option for an individual who is always traveling. When getting such a backpack, it is important that you settle for a backpack that adheres to the regulations of various airlines that you may be using. Most airlines have regulations on what is acceptable to them and a good research before making a purchase would be quite helpful. Conducting a background check on different airlines gives you an idea of the type of backpack that may be good for you and your dog. Failure to do so may result in strict measures such as not allowing the dog on the flight. Always remember to do a prior investigation before traveling with your dog.
Get a dog carrier backpack with proper ventilation
A normal backpack makes use of good ventilation which gives the user comfort and an easy time for them to navigate through the streets even on a hot day. It is very important that a bag ferrying a dog have enough air flow for the same purpose of comfort. Every part of a dog’s backpack should have spaces that allow for easy flow of air in order for the pet to remain comfortable on hot days. An uncomfortable dog is likely to give its owner trouble since it becomes hard for them to stay still while inside the bag. It would also be very unfair to subject your pet to such conditions, and it is thus very important to be friendly and kind to your pet. It is important to ensure that the backpack that you will use to carry your dog should have enough ventilation, as a matter of fact, the ventilation plays a big role in the comfort of a dog.
Legs out or legs in dog carrier
One of the decisions that you may have to make with your dog carrier is how you would want your dog to be carried. The two main options are whether you would like to have the legs inside the backpack or whether you would want to have the legs hanging out from the backpack. The decision does not affect the comfort of your pooch and it is solely dependent on the dog owner. The most important thing is to realize what your dogs really loves, if your dog enjoys having its legs outside when you are taking a walk, it would be better to have a dog carrier backpack that is ideal for your pooch. Every dog owner is in a position to know what their pets like and they are able to give them the best. The option of legs in or legs out is not such a big deal, but you may have to ensure that the legs in type carrier bag for your dog should have proper ventilation for comfort purposes.
Size and weight of your dog
If you have a puppy and not sure what size they will become when fully grown, you can speak to your vet or check breeding guides on the internet. You will then get a rough idea of what size an adult of that particular breed is.
You will have to consider the height of the stroller and the height of your dog. Don’t presume that your dog will just lie down when it gets inside the stroller compartment. We all know that dogs can be unpredictable, especially when they are out and about. Make sure that you are allowing room for your dog to be standing inside the trailer. They will need to get up and turn around inside the trailer. Otherwise it’s going to be cramped and uncomfortable for your dog.
Equally important is the length of your dog. Measure from their chest to the back of the hindquarters. The length of the stroller compartment should be at least a few inches longer than the length of your dog giving them extra room to move about inside.
All strollers will have a weight capacity guide. You will have to consider this when you are looking for a pet trailer. Again allow for growth if your dog is still young.
Weighing your dog is actually more simple than you would think.
OUR TOP TIP: If your stroller or trailer has a suspended fabric floor and you have a heavy dog, you may want to consider having a piece of quarter-inch plywood cut to the size and shape of your trailer floor. This can help stop the ‘trampoline’ effect that happens with soft floored strollers. Your dog will also appreciate the extra stability that this new floor will provide, and it isn’t much extra weight.
Never try and stuff a large dog into a small bicycle trailer as this will not only be extremely uncomfortable and cruel to your dog, it will also create problems for you as you cycle along. It can throw you and your bike off balance and could become extremely dangerous when surrounded by other traffic.
Accessories
Look out for trailers that come with STROLLER KITS. They usually contain a handy third wheel attachment and handle bar that gets added to your bicycle dog trailer to convert it into a walking stroller. These sort of trailers are the best option in our opinion. That way, you end up with a multifunctional stroller-cum-trailer. These can also become great jogging strollers if you like the idea of jogging and cycling with your dog. If your trailer does not come with a stroller conversion kit, look out for one that can be bought for between £20 to £30.

Bikes have come a long way since Toto went for a ride in the Wizard of Oz. Forget the image of the little dog in the basket; nowadays there are riding and running options for all but the greatest of Great Danes.
For running dogs that require leashing due to traffic or temperament, there are specialized dog leashes for biking that attach to the seat post or rear axle of your bicycle. Leashes such as the Bike Tow Leash and Walky Dog Plus leash protect your dog from pedals, wheels and traffic, while coiled springs act as shock absorbers, significantly reducing the force of an unexpected tug. When biking with your dog running alongside you, bike slowly until you develop an understanding of your pet, and vice versa. You’ll want to be ready for sudden “pit stops” when nature calls.
Getting started
You can outfit most bikes with a rack, a basket, or a combination of the two, significantly increasing how much you can carry and making your commute a whole lot more comfortable.
If you’re just planning on running small errands around the neighborhood, a front basket might be all you need. These containers can hold up to about pounds of stuff, but going beyond that can negatively affect handling.
No matter what carrying methods you choose, some assembly is required. Unless your ride is designed primarily for sport (say, a high-end road-racing or mountain bike), you’ll likely find pairs of brazed-on (or welded, or molded, depending on your bike’s construction) eyelets, threaded for a 5-millimeter metric screw, on the seatstays, at the rear dropouts, and at the ends of the fork. These are the attachment points you’ll use to install a rack or basket, and other accessories, like fenders, on your bike. But even if you don’t have these connectors, there’s no need to worry: You can in most cases use P-clamps, small rubber-coated metal loops with a bolt hole, meant for tacking down bundles of cables in construction and available at any hardware store. Wrap them around your seatstays to add a pair of mounting points. Most front baskets can mount directly to a front axle. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Bicycle rental shops can be found all over the city, mainly in tourist areas like Central Station, Dam Square and Leidseplein. Day rates vary from € to € 1with some multi-day rates as low as € 4.
Most rental shops in Amsterdam offer discounts for groups or additional rental days. We advise you to get the optional insurance against theft (for an extra € 2,50 to € per day), especially if you choose a non-touristy model. Usually, rental shops require a copy of your ID or credit card, and/or a deposit between € 50 and € 200 per bike.
Bicycle Rental Shops in Amsterdam
MacBike: These reliable bikes can be seen all over Amsterdam. This company uses sturdy, comfy Batavus Personal bikes for their fleet. Painted red and with a recognizable MacBike sign on the front, hopefully locals will know to be careful around the newbie. Several locations in Amsterdam, check the website.
Orange Bike: As most other rental shops, Orangebike offers guided bicycle tours.
Frederic RentABike: Offers incognito bikes. Insurance is included in their € daily rental fee.
Spinlister: Not very popular in Amsterdam yet but we think it should be, Spinlister is a peer-to-peer bicycle sharing program.
Invest in a Strong Lock for your Bike
Buying a bicycle is easy enough. Keeping it is another story. Bike theft is a huge problem in Amsterdam, so make sure you have a decent lock, even before you get a bicycle. Merchants at the neighborhood street markets sell a wide range of locks. Abus and Axa have good quality steel chain locks and will set you back about € 1and up.
Which is why I’m writing this post.
But here’s the thing: most things are more doable than we think.
You can travel the world with your kids or your wheelchair or your depression. You can walk a pilgrimage with PTSD. You can cycle across a country with your dog.
Perhaps you’ll do those things differently. Perhaps you’ll travel slower or limit which countries you go to. Perhaps you’ll need to do more research. Perhaps you’ll need to come up with a creative way to secure your Yorkshire terrier in a bike basket.
But the point is that our assumptions are often worth questioning.
Just because no one else is cycling across a country with their dog doesn’t mean you can’t. And actually, several of us already are.
So, today I wanted to remind you to see life in terms of possibilities. And also to tell you how Luna and I managed to propel ourselves across France this September.
Training Your Dog for Cycling
If you want your dog to do something new and foreign, start small. To get Luna used to the bike basket, first I put her inside it on the floor in the house. I gave her treats and treated it like a fun game. A day or two later, I put it on the bike and simply walked her up the road and back, cooing praise at her. I did this several times over at least a week before I rode around the block with her in the basket. And then we went a little farther (and a little farther again). And all the time I would let her take breaks to walk or run alongside the bike as well, pedaling slowly and guiding her away from the wheels with commands she already knows from early training.
Accommodations on the Road
The good news about France (and Europe in general) is that it’s easy to find dog-friendly hotels. They might charge an extra fee (but they also usually charge an extra fee for double occupancy, so that makes sense), but most places—from budget to fancy—were totally okay when Luna and I showed up at their doorstep unannounced.
And when I was super exhausted and didn’t want to go asking random hotels about their pet policies and prices? I looked for Ibis Budget and Ibis Styles hotels—a chain I knew took dogs, would have Wi-Fi and acceptable cleanliness, and charged rates I could usually afford.
