money clip Buyer’s Guide
Kinzd Money Clip Front Pocket Wallet
The Kinzd Money clip is m ade of high-quality leather and has a simple design. It makes it to the third spot here thanks to its high popularity with customers and affordable price. It’s perhaps the best front pocket wallet with money clip and RFID-blocking.
The Kinzd Money Clip is just 0.inches thick, 4.inches tall and 2.inches long. It’s a little bigger than the Alpine Swiss wallet – which is a good thing if you’re going to be putting international currency in it. It has three card slots, ID display window and a single coin pocket. When full, it becomes a little bulky, but it will still fit your shirt or jeans pockets. Kinzd also offers its wallet with a pull-tab feature, if you want to get to your cards quickly.
Unlike most magnetic money clip wallets that use two magnets, the Kinzd uses This feature effectively doubles its carrying capacity. You should be able to fit in as many as 40 folded bills in the magnet, without worrying about them falling out. The strong magnet may mess with some of your cards, though, so watch out for that. The wallet is available in colors Black, Brown and Khaki.
The Keplero Luxury Wallet
The only reason why the Keplero Luxury Wallet is number on our list is its somewhat prohibitive cost. If you go by the build quality, design and usability, it gets top marks and could be a worthwhile investment. The Keplero wallet began on Kickstarter and had an overwhelmingly successful fundraising campaign. It’s the best front pocket wallet on the market, hands down when it comes to durability.
The Keplero wallet is made from ultra-strong, lightweight carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a material used in planes and high-end cars. It has an extremely high durability. In a Keplero wallet demonstration, they ran a steamroller over their wallet, and the wallet survived without a scratch.
The Keplero wallet is made up of magnetic layers or sections arranged on top of each other. It has four layers out-of-the-box, but you can choose to buy extra. The front and bottom layer hold a single credit card, while the middle layer can hold two. There’s a single money clip at the back for your cash. You can also fit in small keys, flash drives and a coin or two in the wallet. It’s available in a standard black. They also offer a cheaper Crystal ABS version that you might like.
Bi-folds and tri-folds
Bi-fold and Tri-fold wallets are classic wallets with plenty of money pockets, card slots, secret compartments, an ID window and sometimes a coin pouch. They are usually made of leather, though there are hybrid leather, polycarbonate, elastic, nylon and other material types available. Leather bi-folds and tri-folds can get heavy and bulky when you fill them up. It’s hard to carry such wallets and use them. Leather develops crimps, creases and other defects after constant use.
Metal wallets
Metal wallets are much sturdier and lighter than leather wallets. However, metal wallets are all small-sized and don’t have a lot of carrying capacity – they’re too hard and uncomfortable to make good regular-sized wallets. Metal wallets are made up of materials like aluminum, steel and rarely titanium. Titanium is popular with people who have allergies, as the metal is known to be hypoallergenic.
Card holders
Card holders are just like money clips – except they hold cards, not cash. You can fit anywhere from to 40+ cards in a card holder. There are minimalistic card holders, regular card holders and large-sized ones. Some also come with pull-straps and spring-driven levers to help you access your cards easily.
Herschel Supply Co.
Herschel Supply Co. is a relatively new company, but they have managed to acquire a reputation for excellent workmanship in the short time they’ve been around. They make travel gear and day-to-day use items like clothes, bags and wallets.
The Herschel Supply Co.’s Card Holder cum money clip is one of their best products. It is available in standout, quirky colors that you’ll like if you’re tired of black and brown. The wallet has a metal money clip at the back and three pockets at the front to store at the most cards.
Timberland
Timberland is known for making rugged, long-lasting boots and shoes. It also makes clothing and apparel for men, women and children. Their wallets are well-designed and have the trademark Timberland look and feel.
The Timberland Men’s Hunter Flip-Flop is a nice little wallet. It’s a bi-fold wallet with a twist – the money clip is accessible when the wallet is closed and there are two easy-access pockets at the front. When you open the wallet up, there’s an ID window to the left and a side-facing pocket to the right.
Material
Do you want a leather wallet, a hybrid one or something made of metal? Metal wallets will last you a long time, but they aren’t flexible and perhaps don’t have the character that leather wallets do. Leather needs to be taken care of and will begin to age quickly. Nylon and elastic wallets are a good option if you want something light and durable.
You know the dangers of a large wallet by now. Not only are they uncomfortable to carry, but they are also hard to use. Front-pocket wallets are much more convenient to carry and will fit your pocket along with a smartphone and keys – but you sometimes have to sacrifice on carrying capacity for the privilege.
To Wrap Things Up
Money clip wallets are a great buy if you want to replace your bulky wallet with something light, convenient-to-use and durable. Money clip wallets stay good-looking longer, don’t give you backaches and don’t cause your credit cards to get bent out of shape – making them a smart buy.
The Prägres is a unique front-pocket carrier that will keep your cards and cash secure without the extra weight.
Do the words “money clip” conjure mental images of a bygone era? The first money clip was patented in 1901, and it has since fallen in and out of favor with trend setters.
But it might be time for the money clip to bask in the spotlight again. There’s no doubt that everything vintage is currently en vogue. Vinyl record sales hit a 28-year high in 2016, and it’d be hard to attend a contemporary get-together without spotting a handlebar mustache or two.
So if ever there were a time for the money clip to make its resurgence, this is it. With-it brands like Izola seem to agree, stocking clips with tongue-in-cheek sayings that most modish types would love to carry. Feel like hopping on the trend? Keep reading.
How we selected products to test
When it comes to choosing the best money clips, there are two primary factors: fashion and function. We aimed to choose clips that had both. We also know that money clips aren’t complicated. At their simplest, they’re just a bent piece of metal. But even so, there are some distinctions you can make about which are higher quality and will serve you better over time.
In our research, we found that while many people were looking for traditional money clips, many were also looking for money clip wallets. Money clip wallets are simply cardholders with money clips attached. Most lack the traditional “pocket,” for cash, which many reviewers note cuts down on bulkiness. Still others liked money bands, which, while not truly a “clip,” performed a similar purpose of holding cash and cards together without the bulk of a wallet.
How to use a money clip
However, there actually is some strategy to using one effectively. First, if you have paper money, you should fold it in half. Fold smaller bills on the outside to discourage people from stealing your money. Keep in mind that if you only carry large bills, you’ll likely end up with more change. Once folded, place the money into the clip, folded side first. Then, slide your credit cards in on top of the cash.
If you are using a magnetic money clip, you may want to avoid using it to carry credit cards. There is some concern that doing so will mess with the chip reader on your card. However, reviewers of the magnetic money clips that we tested didn’t find any issue with this.
Important features to consider
Type of clip: There are a few different types of clips from which you can choose. If you’re planning to carry primarily cash, choose a money clip or band. If you have several cards to carry as well, you may want to consider a money clip wallet.
Aesthetics: At the end of the day, all money clips essentially do the same thing: clip your money. So the biggest difference between any money clip is how it looks. There are clips available in everything from carbon fiber to leather to sterling silver, so do some browsing (and set a budget) before you decide. Also consider the weight and width of the clip, since you’ll likely be carrying it most places you go.
Quality: Does your money clip spring back into place after you open it? Does it seem like it will break if it’s a little overstuffed? Does it have sharp edges that’ll damage your phone screen? Or does it have a cheap finish that’ll show scratches from its scuffle with your keychain? Keep this in mind when selecting one.
Capacity: Some of the more poorly-designed clips that we tested could barely open wide enough to fit one bill. Others could probably hold a paycheck’s worth of cash, no problem.
RFID blocking: Many of the money clip wallets that we tested came with RFID blocking technology, which is supposed to stop thieves from stealing your credit card data. Does your wallet actually need this feature? It’s debatable. You can also achieve the same RFID-blocking effect with a piece of aluminum foil.
Group testing
Our testers did as they were told. Because of the clips’ slim profiles, many of our testers were forced to ditch the old gift cards, outdated IDs and crumpled receipts they’d been carrying. Many saw this as an unforeseen benefit of switching to a clip.
After our testers answered these questions, they repeated the process again with a second money clip (or wallet, or band).
Once we had our answers, we did a qualitative analysis to decide which clips were worth testing further. We eliminated the clips that testers found egregiously difficult to use or otherwise problematic.
Budget Banded
The Xband is simplicity at its best, holding money and cards securely in place with a minimal profile and minimal price to boot.
More high praise for this simple band? The Xband was easy to put cards and cash in, and made it relatively easy to take cards and cash out. Its description claims that you only need to remove one strap to remove your cash, while the other strap keeps the rest of your contents secure.
What to Look For in a Front-Pocket Wallet
Don’t know what to look for in a front-pocket wallet? If you’ve owned a front-pocket wallet before, you’ll have an easy time finding a replacement. It’s important that you don’t make an impulse buy, though. Wallet manufacturers have become very creative recently and some of their newer offerings are really useful and innovative. Take your time, do your research and – most importantly- read up on buyer reviews before settling on something.
You don’t want the wallet to be too large. Some wallet manufacturers will attempt to pass off their product as a front-pocket wallet even when it’s clearly too large to fit in there, so be on the lookout for that. Ask yourself if you need to carry your phone and keys along with your wallet in the same pocket. If you don’t need to, then you could get a bigger one for added capacity. Some wallets will fit a shirt pocket well but struggle to get into a jeans pocket.
Storage
Front pocket-wallets aren’t exactly known for their storage capacity. Only get one if you’re okay with carrying a handful of cards and some cash. You’ll have to make do without storage space for receipts, coins and keys. Our society is headed towards the cashless route and plastic money is all we need these days, so it’s not a big sacrifice. If you absolutely must have room for a couple of dozen cards, consider a card holder or a tri-fold wallet instead.
