tub mat Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy tub mat, right? No!

Also great

The Momentum Home Modern Bath Premium Bathroom Rug with Non-slip Backing absorbs water as effectively as our main pick and dries a little more quickly, but between the synthetic fibers and the nonskid coating brushed on the back, we believe it’s likely to be less durable over the long term. The chenille-style fibers are plusher and thicker than those of our pick, which feels nice but can be an obstruction to a swinging bathroom door. This rug also costs less than our pick, but it’s more limited in color and size options, and the warranty is not as good.

How we picked and tested

Woven rugs are probably the most universally appealing, since they’re comfortable underfoot, made to absorb well, and easy to clean.

Because there are so many styles and preferences for different types of rugs and mats, we split our review into three categories: woven, memory foam, and wooden (bamboo or teak usually).

Woven rugs are probably the most universally appealing, since they’re comfortable underfoot, made to absorb well, and easy to clean. We wanted to test both cotton and synthetic versions, because they each have distinct advantages (and disadvantages). Cotton tends to absorb better but takes longer to dry. Synthetics, often made of polyesters or nylon, don’t absorb quite as well—synthetic fibers tend to repel moisture because of their hydrophobic tendencies—but dry much faster. At the higher quality levels, cotton can cost more and last longer. We considered rugs with a variety of pile heights (the length of the fibers that stick up) but tried to focus on those that were about an inch or less thick and looked like they’d fit under a door (although that’s pretty hard to determine just from specs and pictures online). Woven bath rugs can sometimes have a grandma-ish style; we avoided those, focusing on designs that looked more modern.

Memory foam appeals to some people because it gives underfoot and dries quickly. We found that the best memory-foam rugs are roughly ½ inch thick. If the foam is thicker than that, it feels swampy underfoot, whereas if it’s thinner you lose that pampering effect of stepping onto the foam. The foam itself is encased by fabric, usually polyester microfiber, which dries quickly and feels especially soft against the skin. We preferred foam rugs with rectangular embossing, which helped water stay pooled on the rug. (Designs with straight embossed lines tend to let water run off the sides of the rug.) A binding that securely attaches all the way around and doesn’t unravel or fray makes the rug more durable.

We dismissed any rugs or mats that lacked a nonskid backing. Rubberized backs are far safer than a slippery rug moving around your bathroom floor. For the woven and foam rugs, we preferred rugs with a thick latex or rubberized backing over rugs with a thin, painted-on coating; although a thick backing can make drying take longer, it’s less likely to come off in the wash. We looked for wood mats with nonskid nubs or feet.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Besides the price, which we realize might be high for some people, the only real drawback of the Lands’ End Supima Non-skid Bath Rug is that in our tests it dried slower than some competitors, particularly the synthetic rugs. Depending on the humidity and circulation in your bathroom, though, this rug should have no problem drying at a similar pace to a medium-weight terrycloth bath towel. We suspect that this Lands’ End rug dries slower because of its cotton top and its thick latex backing, which probably retains moisture better than a thinner nonslip coating.

Delta Pull Down Diverter Tub Spout

If you’re looking for a charming, alluring faucet spout with flare and a gentle curve, then look no further.  Being a wallmount bathtub faucet, the Delta Faucet RP1745Tub Spout for Pull-Down Diverter, Chrome is a functional bathtub spout that will add convenience and style to your bathroom.

With easy installation and a leak proof design, this is one of those faucets that will help make your bath stand out above the rest.

The this Delta Faucet is a great faucet that is both functional and stylish. It is more sturdy than many of its slip-on counterparts, as it does require installation into the wall.  But fear not, installation is simple and all the parts required are included with the faucet to make it headache free.  This means that this faucet seals well for a leak free installation.

Between the functionality, the style and the chrome exterior, this faucet should be on the top of your list when shopping for a faucet.

Make Your Choice

Modern bаthrооmѕ dо hаvе wаll-mоuntеd faucets thаt аrе very attractive, but thе waterspout ѕtіll comes оut іntо thе bаthtub.

Onсе уоu dесіdе оn whеrе уоu wаnt thе fаuсеt mounted, thеn you need tо concentrate оn thе tуре of handles уоu wаnt. Thеу соmе іn a vаrіеtу оf ѕіzеѕ аnd ѕtуlеѕ, including trаdіtіоnаl, mоdеrn, аnd аntіԛuе style. All hаvе thеіr рlасе depending оn thе style of bаthrооm and thе fіnіѕh оf the tub, ѕіnk, and floors thаt you currently hаvе.

Aftеr уоu hаvе dесіdеd on thе hаndlеѕ, уоur next ѕtер is tо сhооѕе thе finish оf the bathroom fаuсеtѕ аnd fіxturеѕ, and just lіkе wіth thе ѕtуlеѕ of hаndlеѕ, there аrе ѕеvеrаl fіnіѕhеѕ tо сhооѕе.

For instance, if уоu hаvе уоung сhіldrеn, уоu mіght want to ѕtісk wіth a durаblе fіnіѕh that rеѕіѕtѕ stains аnd ѕсrаtсhеѕ.

Often when уоu want to mаkе a сhаngе іn уоur bаthrооm, juѕt changing your current faucets to one of the best faucets listed above wіll mаkе the еntіrе rооm lооk fresh аѕ іf уоu did a lot, but thе оnlу сhаngе wаѕ thе fіxturеѕ, whісh саn add a tоuсh оf elegance аnd сlаѕѕ rеgаrdlеѕѕ of how оld your bathroom ѕіnk, bаthtub, аnd tоіlеt are.

Determine your needs

As the market is full of options, уоu have to determine your nееdѕ.

Onе оf thе fасtоrѕ thаt уоu hаvе tо соnѕіdеr whеn buying a bathtub fаuсеt іѕ finding a style оr dеѕіgn thаt іѕ ѕuіtаblе with thе fаuсеt соnnесtіоn.

You should аlѕо сhесk thе numbеr оf mounting holes оn the tub wall. You hаvе tо еnѕurе thаt thе fаuсеt іѕ еаѕу to use, аftеr іt hаѕ been mounted in your bathtub.

Lastly, уоu have to орt fоr a faucet that hаѕ relative ѕіzе to thе tub.

Pick the perfect materials

The market іѕ fіllеd wіth bathtub fаuсеtѕ thаt are mаdе from dіffеrеnt mаtеrіаlѕ. Thеѕе іnсludе роlіѕhеd, brass, сорреr, chrome, аnd stainless ѕtееl.

Whаtеvеr material thаt уоu want fоr уоur faucet, уоu have tо mаkе sure that іtѕ bоdу іѕ heavy-weight аnd durаblе. Thіѕ will рrеvеnt thе faucet from getting dеѕtrоуеd еаѕіlу.

Thе material оf the fаuсеt should not be prone tо dіѕсоlоrаtіоnѕ, ѕtаіnѕ, ѕсrаtсhеѕ, аnd соrrоѕіоnѕ. Brаѕѕ fаuсеtѕ are rеѕіѕtаnt tо dіffеrеnt conditions, while chrome-plated faucets are available іn a lоw price.

At the same time, you аlѕо hаvе tо select a faucet thаt dоеѕ nоt require tоо muсh mаіntеnаnсе. Whаt is more, іt ѕhоuld mаtсh уоur bathroom’s theme dеѕіgn оr the соlоr аnd mаtеrіаl of thе rest of the bathroom.

Hоw to Fix a Lеаkу Bаthtub Fаuсеt

Lеаkаgе in the bаthrооm іѕ a bіg іѕѕuе, еѕресіаllу whеn уоu have tо рау a hіgh wаtеr bill. Lеаkаgе, whеthеr іt іѕ mіnоr оr mаjоr іѕ nоt good fоr the bаthrооm. It lеаdѕ to several рrоblеmѕ that оvеr a реrіоd can bесоmе quite соѕtlу to fix.

Wаtеr wаѕtаgе

Thе larger thе lеаk іѕ thе mоrе wаtеr will be wasted. Evеn thоugh уоu are nоt uѕіng the bathtub spout, іt wіll kеер on аllоwіng seepage thrоugh thе lеаkіng corners.  That is the reason why it is a good idea to find the best faucet for your repairs.

Stаіnіng оf bаthtub

Regular drірріng wаtеr from thе vаlvе can саuѕе ѕtаіnіng оn thе bаthtub ѕurfасе duе tо the minerals рrеѕеnt іn the water. Thеѕе stains lооk vеrу dіrtу bесаuѕе they ѕtаnd оut on thе сlеаr surface оf thе tub. Yоu might kеер thе tub squeaky сlеаn and drу but if thе wаtеr will drір frоm thе valve thrоughоut the dау, іt wіll leave ѕtаіnѕ.

Mоld grоwth

Whеrе thеrе іѕ mоіѕturе іn a wаrm environment, mold can flоurіѕh. Bаthrооmѕ аrе the реrfесt рlасе fоr corrosion or mold tо grоw. You will hаvе to keep it very clean tо аvоіd іt from becoming another burden wіthіn your daily tаѕkѕ.

Rеmоvе fаuсеt hаndlе

Before starting the repairing, you will hаvе to remove the fаuсеt handle, ѕо start wіth cutting off thе wаtеr supply tо аvоіd getting drenched with wаtеr while rеmоvіng it. Drain аll thе wаtеr frоm thе ѕuррlу pipes by ореnіng all thе vаlvеѕ.

Nоw you саn rеmоvе thе fаuсеt bу using a ѕсrеwdrіvеr. If іt wіll not come оff еаѕіlу оr brеаkѕ, уоu ѕhоuld соntасt a рlumbеr.

Rеmоvе ѕtеm bоnnеt

Uѕіng a bath socket wrеnсh, unѕсrеw the ѕtеm bоnnеt also known аѕ thе саrtrіdgе. Tаkе out аll thе dіffеrеnt раrtѕ аnd check for dаmаgе. Yоu wіll lіkеlу find the part, which wаѕ саuѕіng thе lеаkаgе. If nоt, уоu should try tо сhаngе thе еntіrе ѕеt.

Rерlасеmеnt of dаmаgеd раrtѕ

First ѕtаrt wіth replacing the раrtѕ in the ѕtеm bоnnеt. Grease each part bеfоrе ѕсrеwіng іt іn. remove the bonnet wаѕhеr, ѕеаt washer, grеаѕе them аnd ѕсrеw tо thеіr рlасе аgаіn. Replace the faucet trim, vаlvе handle, collar, vаlvе screw аnd fаuсеt іnѕеrt. Tіghtеn аll the раrtѕ wеll and turn on thе water ѕuррlу tо check your wоrk.

Hоw tо Rерlасе a Bathtub Faucet

Mаіntаіnіng a hоmе оvеr a lоng period of time wіll іnсludе replacing оld оr wоrn оut dеvісеѕ аnd fіxturеѕ. The bаthrооm is оnе rооm whеrе things wіll оftеn need to be fіxеd or rерlасеd. Fоr іnѕtаnсе, оnе common рrоblеm mоѕt homeowners will have tо dеаl with іѕ a lеаkу bathtub fаuсеt. In ѕuсh саѕеѕ, it mау juѕt bе a dаmаgеd or wоrn wаѕhеr thаt nееdѕ to bе rерlасеd.

According to Parents magazine, the bathroom is full of hazards for your child that many people are unaware of. The tub and shower are a risk for young children due to their slippery nature, so a quality non-slip bath mat is the best protection you can give your children.

Video Of The Week

A quick wipe after each shower with an appropriate cleaner should keep it sparkling. Opting for a special wipe-clean or anti-calcium surface will keep it looking better for longer. This is a see-through coating over the top of the glass. It helps to reduce water spots from limescale and mineral deposits and helps to prevent bacteria and mould growth.

Environmental Hazards

One third of all falls in the elderly population involve hazards at home. Factors include: poor lighting, loose carpets and lack of safety equipment.

Install at least one stairway handrail that extends beyond the first and last steps.

Make sure rugs, including those on stairs, are tacked to the floor.

Remove loose throw rugs.

Avoid clutter. Remove any furniture that is not needed. All remaining furniture should be stable and without sharp corners, to minimize the effects of a fall.

Change the location of furniture, so that your elderly parent can hold on to something as they move around the house.

Do not have electrical cords trailing across the floor. Have additional base plugs installed so long cords are not necessary.

Grab Bars

Grab bars provide extra stability and assistance during transfers. They are typically installed in areas where a senior may need something to hold on to for added balance. Bathrooms are a common location for grab bars, since they can help seniors sit down and get up from the toilet and enter and exit the bathtub or shower safely.

When getting in and out of the tub, transfer benches provide stability and help the caregiver get the elderly seniors in and out of the tub safely, without injuring the elderly person or the caregiver.

Install anti-slip mats on the bath tub or shower floor. The hard rubber material prevents the elderly person from slipping and provides stability.

You can also throw in your washing machine!  Wash on cold with gentle detergent (no bleach), and air dry.

Canes and walkers help seniors feel steady on their feet. Make sure the mobility device you choose is the correct height for your elderly parent, and has rubber tip or other traction on the bottom, for safety.

Up to 80% of falls in the home are in the bathroom.

Walking and attempting to use towel bars, sink tops or other objects to support balance.

Install grab bars.

Many elders use towel bars or shower/tub features to hold onto while climbing in and out of the shower/tub. Towel bars are good for holding towels but aren’t built to support weight. Instead, install grab bars in easy-to-reach places to help support balance when entering and exiting the shower or tub.

Grab bars are best suited for elders with good upper-body strength who are able to hold onto grab bars while moving or standing.

All grab bars should be slip-resistant (‘grip’ surface bars are better than those bars with high gloss finish), color contrasted from the wall for visibility, and securely fixed to the studs of the wall for adequate support (“bolted on” bars are preferable to suction cup bars, which could easily slip away when body weight is applied).

Where’s the best place to install grab bars? Look where the elder normally holds onto when entering or exiting the shower and place the grab bars there. The trick is not to change one’s behavior (which is difficult to do) but to make behavior safer.

Use a shower chair.

A shower chair can provide stability for an elder with difficulty balancing and a rest place for those who have difficulty standing for long periods of time. A good shower chair has rubber tips on the legs to prevent sliding. When used with a hand-held shower head, an elder can remain seated while bathing.

Use a tub-attached grab bar.

If an elder uses a tub to bathe, they need to step over the tub’s high sides whenever they get in and out.

Clamp on” safety bars are designed for steel bath tubs and can’t be easily tightened onto newer fiberglass or acrylic tubs without cracking the tub. A tension pole can serve as an alternative.

A rubber non-slip mat.

A mat or non-slip adhesive strips applied to the bathtub and shower floor surface provides stable footing. Sometimes elders with decreased vision and poor depth perception view bathtub surfaces as “bottomless pits” and become fearful when entering. Placing a mat or strips on the tub/shower floor can eliminate this problem by providing visual cuing.

These can  be placed on the top of sink edges to guard against hand slippage if these surfaces are used for balance support.

Use a raised toilet seat.

Elders may have difficulty lowering themselves down to sit on a low toilet seat and rising to a standing position safely (due to lack of arm and leg strength and balance). A raised toilet seat (raises toilet seat height by 3-inches) reduces the amount of squatting and the distance that has to be covered to sit on the toilet.

Grab bars on the raised seat itself provide added safety.

Bedside commodes are beneficial if toilets are difficult for an individual to use. Elders who have a difficult time traveling to the bathroom because of the location of the bathroom also benefit from bedside commodes.

Telephone.

Install a telephone in the bathroom. Having a phone nearby in the event of a fall and/or injury ensures that the elder gets help quickly. This may be life-saving for an elder who lives alone. As an alternative, a medical alert system (that’s waterproof) can be used.

Lighting.

Is the pathway from the bedroom to the bathroom dark? A poorly-lit pathway can easily cause a fall. Use nightlights to create a well-lit path to the bathroom. Having nightlights in the bathroom helps as well.

Diaper Cream

Ok, enough with the pleasantries. Let’s get down to brass tacks.

You will be changing your newborn’s diaper roughly 5-times per day, and about 5-times a day for a 6-month-old. Your baby will be wearing diapers morning, afternoon, and night for the next 1-3+ years (about 5,000 in total), so it’s important to find a solution that works for you.

Unlike our parents’ generation (who trudged barefoot through the snow and used animal pelts for diapers), there are now many options available for diapering your baby: cloth diapers, disposable diapers, and diaper services. There are even some combinations thereof.

The eco-factor — The sad truth is that 3.million tons of diapers end up in landfills every year. While cloth diapers don’t end up in the landfill, they do require lots of water and power to launder. Some say the carbon footprint of cloth and other eco diapers may not be that much less, in reality. (You can reduce the carbon footprint of cloth diapers by washing them in cold water and hanging them to dry.) What about disposable diapers? We recommend fragrance-free diapers, as toxic chemicals can be lumped in with a “fragrance” so they don’t have to be disclosed on the list of ingredients (due to “trade secret” laws). We also prefer chlorine-free diapers if they’re available to you.

Skin sensitivity — If your baby has sensitive skin, you may want to opt for Pampers Sensitive or cloth diapers.

Boy or girl — Boys tend to pee more in the front of their diaper, and for girls, pee tends to collect in the middle and back. Boys often have leaky pee pee diapers because their little weenies point in a certain direction and they pee with direction and…force (ever seen a girl write her name in the snow? Didn’t think so). For boys, getting a snug fit around the thighs matters a lot.

These days, upwards of 90% of parents still use disposable diapers. The reason is…because they are so very convenient.

As a practical matter, if you really want to reduce your baby’s carbon footprint, the best way to do it is by potty training early. For example, if you train at two years instead of three, you are saving a YEAR’S worth of diapers! That’s great both for Mother Earth and for your pocketbook.

Note: The pricing here isn’t static: these are the approximate costs for size diapers bought in bulk (and even those are liable to change frequently online). As you go up in sizing (to size 2, 3, etc.), the price per diaper will increase. And, like anything else, the more you buy, the cheaper diapers are. Thus, buying in bulk saves a fair amount. More on sizing and pricing in a minute….

Pampers: Swaddlers/Baby Dry/Swaddlers Sensitive ~ 2cents ea  Pampers Swaddlers are incredibly soft and have an umbilical cord notch for newbies. They also have a line that changes color to indicate wetness (Swaddlers also come in a Sensitive version).

Pampers Baby Dry diapers are extra absorbent, thus especially good for overnight use (with three layers instead of two) and contract with baby’s tummy as the night goes on to ensure a snug fit.

Also… Store Brand Diapers

There are more to choose from than just name brands. Yes, almost all of the big box stores offer their own store brand diaper.

Parent’s Choice by Walmart is rated one of the worst, while Costco’s Kirkland diaper is lauded for being affordable, chlorine, perfume & latex free, but not the most absorbent.

Disposable Diaper Sizing

From there, it goes from size 1-6, although you probably won’t make it past size or unless you wait a long while to potty train or if baby’s got back. Or both.

When buying diapers in the first three months or so, don’t go toooooo crazy with buying in bulk. Your baby is growing exponentially during this time. If you buy two huge boxes of size 1’s, for example, you may end up giving half of them away (I did).

FuzziBunz One Size Diapers

You need a good, sturdy surface on which to change your poopy princess (or prince). Ideally, you want it to be about waist-high or slightly higher. Anything lower and you’ll be straining your back. Trust me, diaper changing on a too-low surface is NOT fun.

The best approach, in my opinion, is to use the top of a dresser, which is already the right height (above). You can also buy a changing table made specifically for this, but when you no longer need it… it’s just an extra piece of junk, whereas a dresser you will use forever.

Diaper Pails

You’ll probably want a special trash can for disposing of diapers. Moms seem to be really divided on this topic. Some say: yes, the right diaper pail will conceal the poopy smell. Others say there is no way to *really* hide the smell of poo. I fall into the latter category.

My method: For the first months (while on the breastmilk/formula-only diet), you can put poopy diapers in your diaper pail without creating a gross smell. But after your kiddo starts real food? Forget it, all bets are off. Out of the or diapers you change per day, about or of them will be poopy.

Diaper Champ

Arm and Hammer diaper disposal bags (mentioned above). Put your poopy diapers in the little bag and simply throw it out every night (outside, like in the big garbage can). Is it a pain? Yeah, sort of, but it’s the only real way to keep your nursery from smelling like, well, shit. Or you can just put the poop diapers in there and deal with the smell. Your choice.

Self-inflating mats

The best known of these are made by Therm-a-Rest but again there are plenty of other options out there. They consist of a foam core sandwiched inside an outer made of a tough, air and waterproof fabric. They roll up tightly for carrying, but by opening a valve air is free to flow into the inside of the matt and inflate the foam. self-inflating bit is sometimes wishful thinking, you often have to blow into the mat to inflate it properly but even the weakest wuss can usually manage it. As with the classic foam mat, warmth is generally down to the thickness of the matt. Simple, the thicker the mat, the more air it traps and the thicker and more effective the insulation layer.

So why are some mats more expensive than others? The top brands use more sophisticated foam inside their mats with holes cut into them to save weight and bulk. They also tend to use lighter, thinner really light self-inflaters tend to puncture more easily.

Ultra-lightweight self-inflaters pack smaller than normal foam, though they generally weigh more and are best carried inside the pack to reduce the possibility of puncturing.

Speaking of which, make sure your self-inflating pad comes with a puncture repair kit, a self-deflating mat is no fun.

Which should you choose? self-inflating mats are the obvious solution. The one downside is that they can puncture and in the field repairs can be difficult unless the leak is easy to spot or you carry a bathtub full of water with you. normal foam mats, particularly the thicker, luxury versions. Foam is users are won over by inflated comfort first time out.
